Paige Plantier Profile Essay Brother Gagon Eng 101 10 June 2010 Itââ¬â¢s Meatloaf Night! ââ¬Å"Pick up the pace guys, its meatloaf night! â⬠Exclaimed Pleasant Grove High School track coach Bill Saunders. You could see the pain and agony that the athletes were experiencing as they made their final laps around the track in attempt to finish off that dayââ¬â¢s workout. The mid afternoon sun was beating down on the young adults and you could see tears of sweat running from their faces. Bill Saunders has been the track coach at Pleasant Grove for four consecutive seasons now and says, ââ¬Å"There is no greater feeling of success than seeing the smiling faces of those athletes who achieve their season goals! â⬠As the old saying goes, ââ¬Å"Those who canââ¬â¢t, teach. â⬠Those are the precise words that got Bill Saunders to where he is today. As a child he spent his entire life growing up in the same brown colored house in Alpine, Utah. He had never truly enjoyed running before so his expectations for the season werenââ¬â¢t exactly high by any means. Bill decided to join the long distance team his first season in ninth grade. Bill recalls contemplating quitting the team after the extreme amounts of pain he had been in after the first week. However, his mother, being the pushy, strong, good example in his life that he had needed, told him that if you start something, you must finish it, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t raise quitters! He took his mothers words to heart and from that point he changed his mind set about track and went forth with the rest of the season having the goal of getting the school record for the one mile run. ââ¬Å"It was a lot of hard work and I remember going to practice some days feeling like absolute garbage, but I knew what I had to do if I was ever going to reach my goals, so I stuck to it, and did just that. â⬠At the end of his first track season, Bill had in fact broken the school rec ord for the one mile run at the end-of-the-season regional meet. He then went on to states and placed 5th overall. ââ¬Å"If you asked me at the beginning of the season if I was going to be going to states that season, I would have said, ââ¬Ëyeah rightââ¬â¢, but it just goes to show when you set your mind to something you can do anything, and thatââ¬â¢s what I want for my athletes, I want them to set goals, and succeed. â⬠For the remaining years of high school bill continued to run track and went on to earn many state titles for various events. Graduating from high school at age seventeen, bill was able to complete two full years of schooling at Utahââ¬â¢s very own, Brigham Young University, along with two seasons of indoor track, and two seasons of outdoor track, before serving a two year mission in Pocatello, Idaho, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He claims, ââ¬Å"I was a Cougar at heart, and on the track. â⬠(Making reference to his speed. ) Bill explains in detail about how going on a mission was the greatest thing that he could have ever done with his life, and that he spiritually learned more in that two years then what he learned his entire life being a member. He then goes on to say though, that once those two years were over, he was ready to start running again. This time he decided to stay away from the track team and go for longer distances. He began training for Salt Lake City marathon and was determined to finish. That April he ran the marathon and finished with an astonishing time of three hours, forty minutes and twenty-eight seconds, which is a remarkable for a first timer. Just past the finish line he remembers seeing a thin young girl drinking a bottle of water, and immediately that ââ¬Å"wowâ⬠factor went off in his head. He remembers thinking to himself, ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the woman Iââ¬â¢m going to marry! â⬠With that in mind, he went over and asked her out on a date. She accepted and one year later they were married and sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple. The two of them spent the next couple years together finishing their schooling and training together for various marathons throughout the state of Utah. In October 2005 Bill and his wife, Keri, had been training to run in the St. George Marathon. This was going to be the last marathon that they would run before the arrival of their new son. After which Keri was going to have to take it easy from running for a while. She was due in January of 2006, but that wasnââ¬â¢t going to stop her from running the race. Weeks leading up to the race, the two of them were enjoying each otherââ¬â¢s company while going on long training runs through the canyons and what not. The day of the race had finally arrived and Bill recalls feeling ââ¬Å"especially good,â⬠for that particular race. However, 2 hours and about 18 miles into the race, Bill tore his Achilles tendon, which removed him from the race and his running career all at the same time. He explains, ââ¬Å"After about three surgeries and 6 months of physical therapy I was able to walk again without crutches, but running has never truly been the same for me since. â⬠He then goes on to add, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s funny, out of the two of us I was sure the fat pregnant lady was going to be the one having problems that race, but no, she kicked my butt and showed me how itââ¬â¢s done, it was a humbling experience, and I truly love her. â⬠That following December, Bill and Keri both graduated from Brigham Young University. Bill with a master degree in Education, and Keri with a degree in family and marriage counseling. Just a short month later they celebrated the birth of their first son, named Andrew, and was living in a quaint house together in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Four months later Bill was given a job teaching high school Physics at Pleasant Grove High School, for the summer school program and then was given a full-time teaching job for the next fall. A year later the school was in need of a new cross country and track and field coach. Bill thought that he was perfect for the job and applied. The school board found his running resume not only lengthy but impressive and felt that he was more than qualified for the coaching job. Bill explains, ââ¬Å"My teaching and coaching jobs do take up a bit more time from my family than I would like but with the two jobs, itââ¬â¢s enough money to support my wife and son so that she doesnââ¬â¢t have to go to work, and can stay home and take care of the responsibilities that I could not perform as well as her. Like balancing the checkbook and laundry and stuff like that, and she actually enjoys it which is the best part, I would never stand in the way of letting her have a career if thatââ¬â¢s what she truly wanted. But for right now, they system we have works for us. â⬠ââ¬Å"Alright you bunch of Sallyââ¬â¢s, hit the showers, your done for today,â⬠exclaimed Coach Saunders. The practice was over, and so was my time speaking to him. Bill Saunders truly is a man with a passion for running, although he is no longer able to compete for himself, it brings him great joy in knowing that if he pushes his athletes as hard as he pushed himself when he was their ages, that they can have the same amount of success as he did. As I was about to leave and head back toward my car I heard him shout to me to stop for a second. As I turned my head to look back at him, he looked me in the eye and in a stern voice he said to me, ââ¬Å"I really do love this job, and my life, and my family, and now, Iââ¬â¢m going to go eat my meatloaf! â⬠I stood there and chuckled for a moment, shook my head from left to right and then took off toward my car again.

Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary vs. Pride and Prejudice Research Paper Example
Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary vs. Pride and Prejudice Research Paper Example Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary vs. Pride and Prejudice Paper Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary vs. Pride and Prejudice Paper Essay Topic: Pride and Prejudice Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary by Helen Fielding is about a single woman over 30, who smokes too much, drinks too much, and has a tendency to say whatever comes into her mind. She asks herself; can she find her place in the world, and a man? Her parents recommend a man by the name of Mark Darcy. While he might be wealthy and polite, he just seems too awkward and stiff. Is she going to find the love of her life or is she ever going to live the rest of her life in loneliness and despair? Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen takes place in Georgian England where Mrs. Bennet raises her five daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia,- with the purpose of getting them married to rich husbands that can support the family. They are not from the upper class, and their house in Hertfordshire will be inherited by a distant cousin if Mr. Bennet dies. A wealthy bachelor by the name of Mr. Bingley and his best friend Mr. Darcy arrive in town to spend time near the Bennetââ¬â¢s. The shy and beautiful Jane falls in love with Mr. Bingley whereas Elizabeth finds his friend, Mr. Darcy, a snobbish and cold man. She swears to loathe him forever but interestingly enough this is instead the beginning of their wonderful love story. Bridget Jonesââ¬â¢s Diary (BJD) was written by Helen Fielding in 1996. This is one hundred and eighty-three years after Pride and Prejudice (PP) was published in 1813. With that in mind, Bridget Joness Diary would seem to be quite different from Pride and Prejudice but BJD is sometimes regarded as a modern interpretation of P, especially seen through the plot and characters. The girls in both books have to get a husband, but for totally different reasons. However, there are probably more differences than similarities between the two books. You can definitely see that BJD takes place almost two centuries after P because the language, the setting and the theme differ quite a lot from P. Language and social codes stand apart be

Abraham Lincoln Quotes Everyone Should Know
Abraham Lincoln Quotes Everyone Should Know Abraham Lincolns quotations have become a part of American life, and for good reason. During years of experience as a courtroom advocate and political stump speaker, the Rail Splitter developed a remarkable knack for saying things in a memorable way. In his own time, Lincoln was often quoted by admirers. And in modern times, Lincoln quotes are often cited to prove one point or another. All too often the circulating Lincoln quotes turn out to be bogus. The history of fake Lincoln quotes is long, and it seems that people, for at least a century, have tried to win arguments by citing something supposedly said by Lincoln. Despite the endless cascade of fake Lincoln quotes, its possible to verify a number of brilliant things Lincoln actually did say. Here is a list of particularly good ones: Ten Lincoln Quotes Everyone Should Know 1.à A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. Source: Lincolns speech to the Republican State Convention in Springfield, Illinois on June 16, 1858. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. Source: Lincolns first inaugural address, March 4, 1861. Source: A reply to editor Horace Greeley published in Greeleys newspaper, the New York Tribune, on August 19, 1862. Greeley had criticized Lincoln for moving too slowly in bringing an end to slavery. Reseach approach Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Reseach approach - Essay Example Numerous researches and studies are directed on definition of the problem deeply rooted in the minds of Americans who consume junk food and the number of obese people is growing from year to year. This research paper provides a look of the Interactionist Perspective on the problem of obesity among children. It implies that under pressure of surrounding obese people, a healthy individual would become obese also. Therefore, a parental influence within the family may turn a healthy child in an obese one. Moreover, in accordance with the recent studies, low incomes of families, a low level of education and other negatively influencing socio-economic factors prevent children from exercising and obtrude often eating upon them. Thus, within a peer group an obese individual feels himself comfortable, but in the society he is perceived as a deviant one. The article is about the use of LED bulbs that use 90%less energy than incandescent bulbs and ââ¬Å"lasts 100,000 hours compared with 1,000 hours for tungsten filament light bulbsâ⬠(Zolfagharifard, 2014). However, despite being good for the environment, the article basing on the findings of New Zealand-based institute Scion, states that the LED lights have a problem to insects that are more attracted by LED spectrum of light. Blue light generated by LED lights attract insects and they ââ¬Å"claim the attraction can be fatal, causing flies to be thrown off their usual path and into the jaws of predators, disrupting the food chainâ⬠(Zolfagharifard, 2014). The other concern is that LED light ââ¬Å"near ports could attract flying pests, such as the gypsy moth (pictured), that are accidentally transported by shipsâ⬠(Zolfagharifard, 2014). The article mainly deals with the impact of LED light attraction of on insects including high rate of insects being eaten by predators and transportation on ships and the relation of these on the food chain. The findings of the institute relating to the impact of the LED light is interesting and requires the need for better understanding the new technology to avoid harming the environment and altering the food chain. The impact of article to me is that it changes my view on the LED light that I have always believed to be a worthy invention and there is a need to determine ways to reduce the attraction of insects to LED

Faust and the Juxtaposition of Good and Evil Essay -- Literary Analysi
In ââ¬Å"Faust Part Oneâ⬠, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, uses different characters in his play, like God, Mephistopheles, and Gretchen to portray the juxtaposition of good and bad. We are introduced to Faust, who as a mere human makes mistakes throughout the play under some influence of the devil. Therefore it is difficult to write him off as a completely evil being. However, Destroââ¬â¢s argument is extremely useful in helping to interpret Faustââ¬â¢s character in a very levelheaded manner. Destro believes that Faust is a tragic hero for the purposes of the play, but as a person Faust is bad because of his actions and lack of enlightenment up until the near end of his life. Faust was a very selfish character who caused death and despair because of his carelessness; and for that he is bad. Although Faust does show feelings of remorse and guilt in the dungeon scene, for majority of the play, he is flawed and though Mephistopheles manipulated him, Faust had the power to main tain control over his own actions and urges therefore he is a bad or negative character. Faust is a fairly troubled individual. That is a major part of the play. Faust is not like typical humans of his time; he is very curious, self-righteous and extreme and as Destro says, Faust has his own interpretation of morality that are not exactly typical (Page 60). Which helps the reader to understand Faustââ¬â¢s character can be seen as ââ¬Å"highly problematicâ⬠from an ââ¬Å"ordinary moral point of viewâ⬠which is why Faust, regardless of his guilt will never fully change and the pursuit of trying to gain moral clarity and substance will lead to nowhere because he is already very flawed (Destro 60). Essentially, Destro means that Faust was doomed because of his personal views and his desire to ga... ...ity in hell, unable to ever experience love again. Works Cited 1. Andre, Alt, Peter. The Grim Reaper Floats
The story Floating by Karen Brenna is about a woman who can miraculously float. She floats around the house day after day seeming to never leave. Her husband, however, seems completely unimpressed by her ability and sees her as a burden. A burden that he must feed and take care of. It Is not long Into the story before she finds a baby and brings it into her house. While this is happening another story is being told about a woman who meets Satan, and has a conversation with him in her house. The author intended for all of these events to relate to each other, and also to have some sort of deeper symbolism. The woman who aimlessly floats through the halls of her house does not have a choice, she Is trapped. Her and every one else In the story Is dead and stuck In Purgatory walling for their eternal fate to be decided. All of them experiencing death In a different way, the man bitter and mean, the woman and baby oblivious, and the story of the woman who spoke to Satan is already destined for hell.According to the hell depicted in both Dent's Inferno and The Divine Comedy before Landwards 2 you enter hell there Is a place called Purgatory. Purgatory is a place you go after death where you Walt for the decision on whether or not you go to the eternal resting place of heaven, or If your soul Is damned for the remainder of time In the pits of hell. Purgatory is where the majority of the story takes place. The woman does not know she is in Purgatory and that is why she is so amazed she can float. Floating is commonly a property given to the deceased, as in ghosts or spirits. The author also gave his character this ability as to hint to her death. She is trapped in her house, which Is a symbol for Purgatory and that Is why she feels she cannot leave. ââ¬Å"l wish I could float at the supermarket or even outside beneath the stars, over the treetops which would be attractive from this angle. But I can only float through the rooms of my own houseâ⬠(Brenna 303). In this passage the character is saying that outside is tantalizing and free, but she is bound only to the rooms and halls of the house.Because the house is a symbol for Purgatory, the outside world is an allusion to even, and that is why she wants nothing more than to leave the house and fly among the stars. Much Like someone would Like nothing more than to be allowed to be free of the bonds of Purgatory and frolic In the paradise of Heaven. Another hint in the text is when the author writes about the main character floating through the halls, and thinking back on her life as if it was a past event. She thinks about how Landwards 3 she arranged things on her coffee table trying to impress people, and have the silly objects reflect on who she is and realizes how foolish it was. A lot of people believe Tanat once you pass on Tanat you are enlightens Ana all earthly possessions Ana desires are realized foolish. This is what the author is referring to, because she is now dead she has been enli ghtened thus removing all of her earthly desires. The author also compared the main character to Chloral's bridal couple, which are newly wed ghosts floating across the canvas painted by the artist Mark Chalks. This could be yet another allusion to her being dead. ââ¬Å"l float like Chloral's bridal couple alienates, past the huge oak mirror my grandmother bequeathed me whereâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"(Brenna 303). Besides the bridal couple reference the author also mentions the main character's deceased grandmother bringing the thought of death into the reader's mind once again. All of these blatant messages of death shows that the author intended for the characters to be dead. The main character is not the only one who is dead in this story; there is also the husband and the baby.As we know, the husband of the main character of the story seems to always be aggravated and cranky, there is valid reasoning behind this. The wife and husband died at the same time, the husband knows that they are d ead while the wife is oblivious. This is why the Landwards 4 husband is so utterly unimpressed by his wife's ability to float. They can both do it, he is Just trying to protect her from the truth of their death. By not floating, the husband is letting his wife believe that they are still in the mortal world, that is why she can float and he is unimpressed. This would also explain why he seams so irritated all the time. Imagine if you knew you were dead, while you were trapped in Purgatory and you needed to pretend you weren't for the sake of the person you loved most in the world. This is an obvious reason as to why one would be mad. The baby in the story is also dead, The first layer of hell is Limbo and it is where all the uninhabited baby's go. The baby in the story died before it had a chance to be baptized, that is why they found it in Purgatory because it is also deceased. The reason it went to Purgatory is because the babies fate has not yet been decided. The rye of hell closes t to Purgatory is Limbo, Limbo is where all the uninhabited babies go and that is where this baby went, the back room where the baby is kept is Limbo. The punishment in Limbo is for all of the uninhabited babies to float through the river of Coacher for eternity, to feel sorrow and hopelessness forever. In the story the baby is put into a drawer lined with blue velvet, the blue symbolizes water, and the drawer stops the baby from wandering around as in Landwards 5 it traps the baby.Another part of the story mentions that the back room is where all he old photos are kept, all of the photos are souls trapped in a photographic tomb. The story also talks about how someone cracked the window with a pellet gun, so the window needed to be covered with a sheet. The window was a tantalizing view of heaven until it was covered leaving the room completely void of hope. The last story was of a woman who spoke with Satan and told him her life story this could also be interpreted in many ways. Th is last scenario of the story when the woman speaks to Satan in person is pretty straight forward.Whenever you hear of anyone speaking to the dark lord, you generally assume they are going to hell. The woman Lucifer spoke to was the main character of the story, but this event occurred in the past as foreshadowing to the point in time when she dies implying that the woman waiting in Purgatory is destined Tort Hell. All of this evidence points to the author writing a new and twisted version of The Divine Comedy. This twisted text makes you think that hell is everywhere and even if it isn't apparent you could be in Purgatory this instant waiting for your eternal damnation.
